The Chabot football team finished the regular season with a 41-21 loss to rival Laney in Bay 6 Conference play on Saturday night, Nov. 16 at Gladiator Stadium.

Sophomore quarterback Chayce Akaka was 9-of-20 passing for 159 yards with two touchdowns and added 68 rushing yards in what could be his final game in a Chabot uniform.

Chabot (4-5, 1-3) had a chance to earn five wins and a possible bowl berth this season, but a scheduled home game on Oct. 26 against Santa Rosa J.C. was postponed because of the Kincaid Fire, which caused Santa Rosa to temporarily suspend classes and athletic activities. Chabot representatives were scheduled to meet with the state commissioner on Monday to argue their case to have game made up this week. But since the CCCAA has announced its bowl matchups, it appears unlikely that the game will be made up.

Chabot sophomore receiver Janiero Crankfield left his mark on offense in all three phases against Laney. He caught a 23-yard scoring pass from Akaka and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Tanner Wright. Crankfield also rushed for 33 yards on four attempts on reverses.

"So sad to see this season end," Crankfield said. "The season didn't end like how we wanted it to, but I'm going to miss these guys."

Chabot got off to a slow start, falling behind by three scores early in the second quarter before getting in gear on offense.

Laney quarterback Ryan Mackey had three first-half touchdown passes in the half. He connected with Dior Walker-Scott for a 13-yard scoring play on the game's opening possession. Mackey also hit Merle Bass and RJ Stern on touchdown passes for a 21-0 Laney lead.

Chabot (4-5, 1-3) responded with a seven-play, 77-yard scoring drive. Akaka hit an open Tanner Wright for a 41-yard gain as the Gladiators reached the Eagles 19-yard line before reaching into their bag of tricks. Akaka threw a backwards pass to Crankfield in the right flat, who then stepped back and hit Wright deep in the end zone, cutting the Laney lead to 14.

The Eagles (6-4, 4-1) moved down to the Chabot 25, but Mackey's fourth-down pass fell incomplete as the Gladiators took over. Crankfield and Akaka had runs of 22 and 40, respectively, to the Eagles 13. Two plays later, Wright scored for the second time in the quarter, on a 13-yard pass from Akaka with 46.9 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 21-14.

The Gladiators missed on a golden opportunity on their second possession of the third quarter. Chabot marched from its own 28 and had a first-and-goal from the Laney 1. Akaka was stuffed on a sneak and Isaiah-Nehemiah McGlown was stopped just short of the goal line as well, but at the end of the play, the Gladiators were flagged for a personal foul, moving the ball back to the 16. Akaka's third-down pass fell incomplete, and the Gladiators missed a 33-yard field goal.

The Eagles followed with a 13-yard touchdown pass play from Mackey to Ta'ir Brooks, extending their lead to 27-14.

"If we could've scored that would have been a huge time for us in the game," Crankfield said.

After a Chabot punt, the Eagles scored again as Mackey hit Walker-Scott for a 3-yard touchdown, making it 35-14 Laney with 9:21 remaining.

Mackey then tied the Laney school record with his sixth touchdown pass in the game, on a 29-yard completion to Junior Alatani. Mackey was 25 for 36 for 350 yards. Wright led the Gladiators with four receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
