SAN FRANCISCO — The Chabot College football team got off to a good start in a Bay 6 Conference matchup at perennial Northern California power City College of San Francisco on Oct. 27.
The Gladiators forced a pair of punts and turned an interception into a touchdown for an early 7-0 advantage.
Unfortunately for Chabot, the Rams scored 28 unanswered points to pull away with a 38-13 win over the Gladiators.
The loss marks the first time all season the Gladiators have dropped two in a row as they fall to 5-3, 1-2 Bay 6.
Freshman quarterback Chayce Akaka had 159 yards on 11 of 27 passing, but was picked off three times as Chabot turned the ball over four times and also had a punt blocked.
The Chabot defense was also done in on the big plays as CCSF had two scoring drives that took just four total plays that turned a 14-7 game into a 28-7 halftime deficit for the Gladiators.
Receiver Frank Hall had an amazing performance for the Rams, finishing with nine receptions for 243 yards with touchdown catches of 58, 91 and 34 yards. Quarterback Jack Newman was 16 for 23 in the air for the Rams for 357 yards and three scores.
The Gladiators came out of the gate and stood toe-to-toe with the Rams as CCSF punted on their first two possessions before Darriell Wells picked off Newman, setting up the Gladiators at the Rams 32.
On the next play, Chabot tried some trickery as Da'Juan Johnson took the ball and looked to pass the ball but tucked the ball in and zig-zagged his way thru the Rams defense for a 32-yard touchdown to give Chabot a 7-0 lead.
The Rams responded as DeShawn Collins scored on a 9-yard run and Newman found the end zone on a sneak for a 14-7 Rams advantage early second quarter.
CCSF used the deep ball once again as Newman and Hall connected with scoring bombs of 58 and 91 yards.
The Gladiators opened the second half with some momentum back. On the second play of the second half, Akaka sliced through the Rams defense on a keeper for 65 yards and a Gladiators touchdown to pull within 28-13.
CCSF came right back as Newman hit Hall for a 34-yard scoring strike.
Chabot never threatened again with an interception, fumble and blocked punt in the second half.
Hufangahau Moala had a pair of sacks and Ethan Owens had an interception for the Gladiators.
Chabot plays their final home game of the year on Saturday against College of San Mateo at 6.
