Amari Tidwell ran for 141 yards and scored two touchdowns, one rushing, one receiving, but the Chabot football team fell to host San Joaquin Delta 31-28 on Saturday in the tough National-Bay 6 Conference.
The Gladiators' fourth consecutive defeat was not without highlights for head coach Eric Fanene's resilient squad. Chabot (2-6, 0-3) battled back from deficits throughout the game. Quarterback Kekoa Turangan scored on a 2-yard run with 1:03 left in the fourth quarter, followed by Andrew McGinty's extra point, to trim the gap to 31-28.
But San Joaquin Delta (1-7, 1-2) held on for its first win of the season.
Delta quarterback Justin DeMello had a big game, completing 24 of 26 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns.
Tidwell averaged 6.3 yards on 23 carries as Chabot amassed 189 yards rushing. Tidwell scored on a 1-yard run late in the third quarter to give Chabot its first lead of the game, 21-17, along with McGinty's extra point. That followed Tidwell's 42-yard touchdown late in the first half on a pass from Turangan which trimmed the deficit to 17-14.
After Delta took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on an 11 play, 80-yard drive, Beck, who rotates at quarterback with Turangan, scored on a 7-yard run to tie the game. But Delta responded with a 10-0 surge in the back-and-fourth contest.
Things get tougher for injury-plagued Chabot this week as the Gladiators host unbeaten College of San Mateo (8-0, 3-0) at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 1 in both the Oct. 25 CCCSIA Football Poll and JC Athletic Bureau Coaches Poll.
