CHABOT EYES ROAD TEST IN SANTA ROSA

The Chabot football team (1-2) travels to Santa Rosa Junior College (1-2) on Saturday, when both teams will look to even their records. Kickoff is 5 p.m.
The Gladiators are coming off a 27-7 loss at home to stubborn Sacramento City, and Santa Rosa is looking for its second straight win after defeating Contra Costa 10-0 last week in a defensive battle. SRJC limited the Comets to 181 yards in total offense and just 60 net yards rushing (1.7 yards per carry).
Chabot (1-2) turned over the ball five times, all on interceptions, but the Gladiators defense stood firm. Defensive back Youcef Benchohra led the defense with eight solo tackles, and fellow DB Eric Johnson had seven solo tackles.
"I thought our defense stepped up big-time in the second half, and some stops in that first half. We kept some points off the board," Chabot coach Eric Fanene said after the game. "We're young on both sides of the ball. It's the way you handle those wins and handle those losses, that's what adversity is all about."
The Gladiators struck first against the Panthers on a 23-yard reception by Jeremiah Crum from Kekoa Turangan. Crum finished with six receptions for 109 yards (18.2 yard average). Turangan ranks fifth in the state in passing yards per game at 306.3.
Damien Moun added nine catches for 84 yards and is ranked No. 2 in the state in yards receiving per game with 111.3.
The Gladiators will also travel to Contra Costa on Oct. 1 to complete nonconference play before the bye week. Chabot will open play in the Bay 6 Conference on Oct. 15 against East Bay-rival Diablo Valley.
Fanene has served as an assistant at Santa Rosa JC, along with College of Marin and Mendocino.
For Santa Rosa, freshman Isaac Torres has a team-high 17 receptions for 215 yards. Quarterbacks Santino Chavez and Carson Budke have combined to compete 41 of 77 passes (53.2 percent) for 543 yards and four TDs.
