CHABOT HOSTS RIVAL DVC IN BAY 6 OPENER

The long-awaited showdown between East Bay football rivals Chabot (1-4) and Diablo Valley College (3-2) to open the National-Bay 6 Conference season is set for Saturday at Gladiator Stadium.

Chabot quarterback Kekoa Turangan is averaging 256.6 yards per game (No. 7 in the state), and DVC's Jordan Cooke is at 234.5 a game (No. 10), and coming off a monster game in a 50-43 win over Sequoias in overtime. Cooke completed 40 of 47 attempts for 506 yards and three touchdowns. The Vikings' Javoni Gardere had 202 yards receiving.

Turangan also had a massive game in a season-opening win over Siskiyous with 31 completions out of 44 attempts for 430 yards and two TDs.

The Gladiators are looking to rev things up off the bye week after finishing nonconference play with a loss to host Contra Costa, 49-15.

Chabot's Raymond Orozco highlighted the effort with a 61-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Youcef Benchohra (10 tackles) and Kingston Sapoi (9 tackles) paced the defense.

Chabot and DVC usually play tight games, including having split their previous two matchups, with the Gladiators prevailing 28-23 in 2019 and DVC winning 32-3 last season. Neither team competed in 2020 during COVID-19 pandemic times. Chabot also routed the Vikings 35-7 in 2018.
