The Chabot men's basketball team has high expectations coming into the 2022-2023 season.
The Gladiators, who were 18-11 last season and advanced to the second round of the CCCAA State playoffs, are expected to be improved in outside shooting, depth, size and basketball IQ.
Four Gladiators sophomores from last season earned A.A. degrees. Three players signed full scholarships: First-team all-Conference guard Isaiah Veal (Spring Hill College), 6-foot-8 Skylar Robinson (Metro State University), and 6-7 Christian Pitcher (Montana Western University).
The 2022-2023 Gladiators return many impact players expected to play at high level.
Chabot head coach Keenan McMiller, who continues to have the program on the rise, breaks down the talented and deep squad:
* 6-9 forward David Ogunleye is being recruited by various D-1 programs. A first-team all-conference pick in 2021-2022, Ogunleye returns as the Gladiators' leading rebounder (7.0 rpg).
* 6-3 guard Jaiden Rivera is also being recruited by various D-1 programs and was first-team all-conference on defense and nominated for an Academic All-State award in 2022-2023. He returns as the Gladiators' leading scorer at (11.4 ppg).
* 6-1 point guard Diggy Winbush has D-1 programs' interest and returns as the Gladiators' leader in assists at (3.4 apg) and highest percentage 3-point shooter at 45 percent.
Other notable returners and transfers are as follows:
* 6-2 guard Makaio Mims (redshirt freshman/James Logan HS) returns after competing as an All-State performer for Chabot Track and Field in the spring. Mims is a scorer, playmaker and solid defender.
* 6-10 center Terrence Craft (redshirt sophomore/Leadership HS) returns after playing the 2019-2020 season. Craft brings tremendous size and athleticism on defense and rebounding.
* 6-4 guard Nick Tumlin (redshirt freshman/California HS) will be expected to shoot the 3 at a high percentage and defend and rebound.
* 6-0 point guard Lorenzo Abellar (redshirt freshman transfer from Santa Rosa JC) is an impact point guard who can make plays at all three levels.
* 6-4 guard/forward sophomore David Hector (transfer from City College of San Francisco/Moreau Catholic HS) brings winning mentality leadership scoring, rebounding and playmaking)

CHABOT TOURNAMENT: The Gladiators are preparing to host their own tournament to open the season, and will face Reedley at 2 p.m. on Nov. 3, Diablo Valley at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4 and College of Alameda at 6 p.m. on Nov. 5. Conference play will begin against Foothill on Jan. 4
