The Chabot College men's basketball team opened the season with gusto, crushing three opponents in the 55th Gladiator Classic this past week.

Over a three-day stretch, Chabot, ranked No. 4 in the preseason CCCMBCA North Region Poll, polished off Reedley 90-66, Diablo Valley 99-63 and College of Alameda 90-69.

Chabot head coach Keenan McMiller saw a lot to like about the Gladiators' efforts. He was pleased with the strong shooting that produced three straight outputs of at least 90 points.
"I'm excited, excited in their direction. They were super-upbeat today," McMiller said Monday. "Shortened day today, but everybody wanted to come in an get some extra work, so that's a good sign. We're going in the right direction. Overall, they're just good kids. They're really good kids. That's what I'm tryng to do, is bring in good people. We want to continue what we're doing and get better."

Of Winbush's play, McMiller said, "Shot it well. Made all the plays ... Starting offensively, he's definitely playing up to the way he could have played last year, but he was solid last year. He knows he has more of a leadership role this year. There's more expected of him, so I expect him to put high efficiency and consistent numbers each night."
Winbush shot an impressive 44 percent from the floor last year, which is among the top 10 in the state, the coach says.
Against East Bay-rival DVC, Broadous had 19 points and five rebounds, going 3 for 3 on 3-pointers, to pace a balanced offense. Hector had 18 points and three boards, Winbush added 13 points, five assists and two steals, Rivera had 13 points and three boards, Makaio Mims had 12 points and seven rebounds.
