COSTELLO IGNITES ROMP WITH THREE-RUN BLAST

TJ Costello, a freshman infielder out of Dublin High, belted a three-run home run in the first inning and the Chabot baseball team walloped College of San Mateo 19-8 Saturday at Steve Friend Stadium for the Glads' first Coast-North win.

Costello's blast -- his third home run of the season -- highlighted a five-run early rally.

The Glads (14-8, 1-2) pounded out 11 hits, salvaging a win in a three-game series with the rival Bulldogs. Chabot also committed no errors. A versatile athlete, Costello was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and four RBI. He also doubled. Liam Forsyth also homered for Chabot, and Carmelo Rivera doubled.

Leadoff Raoul Fabian Jr., a right fielder from Oakland, scored twice and had two RBI. Fabian Jr. is having a stellar season, leading the conference with seven home runs and 17 stolen bases on an aggressive base-running team. He has scored 32 runs, tops in the Coast-North, and is batting .397, fourth in the conference, with 20 RBI.

Emmitt Phinney, who leads the conference with a .414 batting average, scored three runs in Saturday's rout. Noah Morton was 1 for 3 with two runs and three RBI.

Gabe DeBenedetto was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI. Jalen Owens had a hit, two runs and an RBI.

Relievers William Aviles (3 IP, 2 H, 0 R) and Jack Downing (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R) helped nail it down. Aviles is No. 3 in the conference in ERA at 2.23.

Chabot turned it into a blowout with a six-run seventh, on a day for big innings for the winners. The Glads also scored seven in the fifth.

Chabot looks to keep it rolling with a three-game series this week against Canada (12-11, 0-3): Tuesday away, Thursday at home (both at 2:30) and Saturday away (1 p.m.).
