GLADS GALLANT IN FOOTBALL DEFEAT
The Chabot College football team nearly pulled off a massive upset in its season finale
The Chabot College football team nearly pulled off a massive upset in its season finale, but a missed last-second field goal sealed the Glads' fate.
Unbeaten host De Anza survived and took a 26-24 win on Saturday to finish 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the Pacific 7 Conference.
"I thought Chabot played a great game. They played us probably better than anybody has all season," De Anza head coach Joe D'Agostino said.
The Glads (4-6, 1-4) delivered a gallant effort. Chabot surged late in the season, also with a 35-7 win over Los Medanos on Nov. 16, preceding the heartbreaking loss to De Anza in the finale.
Chabot head coach Eric Fanene gives his team high marks.
"The young men my staff and I led this year were truly special. The resiliency of coming off a 0-10 season in 2023 and competing like we did Saturday, and throughout our 2024 season, is a testament to their preparation and dedication to our program."
Chabot opened up a 17-0 lead before De Anza went on a 20-0 run. The Glads retook the lead 24-20 on a 5-yard pass from Cooper Matthews to Joseph Stephens with 10:05 left in the fourth quarter, capping a 13-play, 87-yard drive. De Anza went ahead to stay 26-24 on a 31-yard completion from Antevious Jacks to Devin Dawkins.
Matthews, the signal-caller, had a big game, completing 25 of 44 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns. Stephens had seven receptions for 116 yards. Malakai Matthews had seven catches for 53 yards and two touchdowns.
Trevor Rund carried 13 times for 85 yards.
Chabot put De Anza on the ropes in the first half. Matthews' 3-yard TD catch, followed by a Donovan Umeki kick, made it 7-0 in the first quarter. Umeki's 30-yard field goal made it 10-0 early in the second quarter, and Chabot increased the margin to 17 points on a 15-yard Matthews' TD grab and Umeki extra point.
Matthews had a monster season, finishing fifth in the state in receiving yards per game; and first in conference for receiving yards and yards per game.
Fanene praised his players for "trusting the process" and developing a culture that will help take the program back.
"At Chabot we always preach 'Play like a Gladiator' — with passion, class, and resiliency, while encouraging our young men to represent our College, coaches and, most of all, our families."
