CHABOT MEN SHINE IN BIG LA TOURNEY
The Chabot men's basketball team, ranked 13th in the latest CCCMBCA state Poll, continued its impressive nonconference play advancing to the championship game of the Wild West Shootout on Saturday.
The Glads (7-2) fell to host West Los Angeles College, 86-73, and finished second. Chabot opened the Shootout with a win over LA Valley 88-64, and then beat Long Beach City 82-69.
Chabot, guided by interim head coach Marcel Miffin, has faced tough competition down south as it prepares for the challenging Coast-North Conference season.
A pair of Salesian High graduates and freshman guards, Amani Johnson and Zion Yeargin, were all-tournament selections.
Yeargin led the team against West Los Angeles with 24 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Johnson had 14 points and four rebounds, and Oz Savage added 10 points and three boards.
Yeargin had 18 points against Long Beach, and Johnson had 15 points, going 10 for 11 from the free throw line. Christian Wilson added 13 points and four rebounds.
Matthias Moore paced Chabot against LA Valley with 19 points (9-10 free throws) to go with five rebounds. Johnson was 10-11 on free throws, notching 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Marcellus Edwards and Iyon Brown both had 14 points.
The Glads will host West Valley at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13.
